How does your stress affect your hormones?

How homeopathy can help with stress

Stress is impossible to avoid. We all have periods in our lives when we experience a lot of stress. The intensity of the stress and long-term consequences depend on many factors. I see many people in my clinic who have had very stressful experiences and this has led to physical symptoms.

What defines stress for each person is different for everybody, and depends on personality and personal history. For example, in the case of redundancy, one person may experience severe stress with lowered self-esteem. Another person, may see redundancy as an opportunity.

How does stress affect the body?

Selye was the first scientist to identify ‘stress’ as underpinning the nonspecific signs and symptoms of illness.

Stressful event ------> The nervous system (particularly the brain) ------> The stress response -

(the stressor) experiences and interprets the meaning of the reaction of the body

the stressor

The reaction of the body to stress include:

  • low energy

  • low mood

  • low immunity

  • blood sugar balance

  • changes to digestion

  • changes to thyroid function

How does stress affect the body?

The body's stress mechanism is called the HPA axis. Here is how it works:

Body's stress mechanism, the HPA axis, and homeopathy

How does the body cope with cortisol?

Cortisol is known as the stress hormone. Cortisol acts on most tissues in the body. This includes the immune system, the intestines, and the brain.

The immediate effects in time of acute stress is of heightened cortisol. This lessens the stress reaction, which also decreases the immune activity. It also has an impact on sleep and anxiety levels.

If you have stress over a prolonged period of time, this can affect your cortisol levels. The HPA axis then becomes dysfunctional. This can lead to poor sleep, along with low energy and depression.

How homeopathy can be beneficial for stress

Homeopathic remedies if well-selected can both calm the nervous system as well as alleviate physical symptoms. You would expect to see better sleep as well as a lessening of anxiety over a period of time.

The liver and adrenals work very hard during stressful periods. My approach is that I also often use homeopathic liver support and adrenal support together with remedies for the totality of your symptoms.

How long does it take to improve the feelings of stress and other symptoms that may be a sign of stress?

This depends on how severe these symptoms are, your current stress levels, your personal health history, and your history of medication

How many sessions are needed?

The first consultation is an assessment where we go through your health history as well as discuss your symptoms. We then have follow-up appointments every 4-6 weeks. These follow-on treatments are important to ensure gradual progress.
