Which type of sleep are you missing out on?

Homeopathy Sleep

Do you have an issue with getting enough good quality sleep?

How do you know if you have had good or bad quality sleep?

A survey showed that approx one third of adults in the UK suffering from sleepless nights. Of these two thirds suffer from disrupted sleep and nearly a quarter manage no more than five hours a night.

We as humans have 2 completely different types of sleep - Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). No one type of sleep accomplishes all. Each stage of sleep offers different brain benefits.

- REM sleep is connected to dream sleep.

- NREM sleep is subdivided into 4 stages - stages 1-4 increasing in their depth of sleep

REM and NREM sleep flip-flops back and forth during the night, in a 90 min cycle.

Do you have trouble getting to sleep? Or do you wake up very early?

Either of these can feel like you have not slept well.

If you go to bed late at night what sleep are you missing?

Going to bed a few hours later you lose a large % of NREM sleep.

In the first half of the night, most of the 90 min cycle is deep NREM sleep with little REM sleep.

One of the main purposes of NREM sleep is to remove all unnecessary neural connections. A study showed that early night sleep, rich in deep NREM provides great memory retention.

If you wake up early in the morning what sleep are you missing?

Waking up a few hours earlier you lose a large % of REM sleep.

In the second half of the night, most sleep is REM, with little NREM sleep.

The dreaming stage of REM sleep plays a role in strengthening neural connections.

During REM sleep studies have been done that show that although the body is asleep the mind seems wide awake.

The body in REM sleep shows no muscle tension and there is no tone in your voluntary muscles. This prevents you from acting out your dream experiences.

Homeopathy for Better Sleep

There have been a few studies on the impact of homeopathy for better sleep, such as those reported in The Natural Library of Medicine. This study found that individualised homeopathy seemed to produce a significantly better effect than placebo.

There are a number of homeopathic remedies that may help acute insomnia. However, for chronic insomnia (insomnia that has been going on for over 3 months), the causation needs to be determined and looked at together with your overall health history.
