Sleep disorders are a common issue affecting millions worldwide, and has an impact on health and quality of life. During menopause, sleeplessness is even more common.
Conventional treatments for poor sleep include sleeping pills, melatonin and cognitive-behavioral therapy. However, have you thought of homeopathy for better sleep?
Homeopathy for Better Sleep During Menopause
A number of homeopathic remedies may help with acute sleeplessness, such as Coffea cruda, Cocculus indicus, Graphites, although there are many more.
When sleeplessness becomes chronic (when there is sleeplessness 3 times a week for 3 months or more), the cause should be investigated.
There have been a few studies on the impact of homeopathy for sleeplessness, such as those reported in The Natural Library of Medicine. This study concluded that individualised homeopathy produced a better effect than placebo.
A homeopath will select the homeopathic remedies tailored to you based on all of your symptoms, not just your poor sleep.
How homeopathy helped with sleep issues during menopause
This case study shows the effectiveness of homeopathy for better sleep during menopause
Client Information: 51-year-old female, business owner.
Chief Complaints: Chronic insomnia for 20+ years, frequent night-time awakenings and light sleep, leaving her feeling tired and fatigued.
Medical history:
Generally fit and healthy
No use of prescription medications.
No sleep aids used
Symptoms: Poor sleep quality, occasional digestive issues, eczema, the odd hot flush due to perimenopause
Symptom Analysis: Insomnia that started with the birth of her child 20+ years ago.
She rarely slept through the night and when she awakened between 1am - 5am she was awake for 1.5 hours.
Her sleep environment was conducive to rest, but she reported an overactive mind when awakening as this was her creative time.
Initial Homeopathic Assessment:
During the initial assessment, comprehensive information was gathered about her lifestyle, diet, emotional state, and sleep patterns.
Sleep diary to monitor sleep habits and patterns.
Homeopathic Approach:
Homeopathy treats the individual holistically, considering physical, emotional, and mental symptoms. My client's treatment plan included:
Understanding her Symptoms: Understanding her particular insomnia, such as frequent awakenings.
Personalised Homeopathic Remedies: Based on her symptoms and overall constitution, I prescribed a constitutional remedy, organ support remedies, and miasmatic remedies.
Lifestyle Adjustments: Recommendations included relaxing before going to bed, and various self-care.
Follow-Up Consultations: My client had monthly follow-ups to monitor progress. The homeopathic remedies were adjusted based on my client's feedback, emphasizing the need for a tailored approach.
Outcome:
After five months of homeopathic treatment, my client reported good improvements:
Sleep Quality: She was able to fall asleep and have good quality sleep up till 2:30. She was not awake for as long and the sleep was better than it had been. The fatigue has improved as well although she still does not feel 100% refreshed in the morning.
Other perimenopausal symptoms: There has been no PMT, mood swings or hot flushes
Eczema: This has cleared up although there is still a patch of slightly dry skin
Key factors contributing to the positive outcome included:
Individualised Treatment: Tailoring remedies to specific symptoms and constitution.
Holistic Approach: Addressing underlying emotional and lifestyle factors contributing to sleep disturbances.
Regular Monitoring: Follow-ups for adjustments to the homeopathic treatment.
Homeopathy provided a safe and effective alternative for my client, leading to significant improvements in her sleep quality and overall well-being.
"Whilst I was 'coping' I never had a good night's sleep and never woke up feeling refreshed. I felt this was having an impact on all areas of my life.
From the first session, I felt completely listened to with no stone unturned. All physical symptoms were investigated, however minor, to get to the bottom of what could be causing my sleep problems.
I have noticed changes in many physical symptoms and feel that my body is having a 'deep clean'. Overall I feel calmer and whilst my sleep isn't perfect, I have more OK nights now and feel generally more positive."
