Do you find Winter difficult? I would like to let you know that you are not alone. The days are short with low light levels and outside it is cold and damp.
As the days grow shorter and the weather colder, many people in the UK find themselves feeling low in energy, downcast, or even depressed. This phenomenon, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), can have a significant impact on mental and physical wellbeing.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common with 1 in 50 people having mood disturbances in the Winter months.
When the weather is bad, it can be hard to step outside, but I bet that once you do, you feel so much better for it. Walk briskly and get the heart rate up slightly. The endorphins must kick in because when you come back home you are likely to be in a happier mood with increased energy.
While traditional treatments often include light therapy and antidepressants, homeopathy offers a natural and holistic approach to managing SAD symptoms.
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
SAD is a type of depression triggered by the changing seasons, when daylight hours are reduced.
You may start to feel ‘down’ when days get shorter in the Autumn and Winter and then start to feel better in the Spring when the days get longer again. A lot of people who get SAD can't wait for Spring to arrive.
The symptoms of SAD can include:
Persisten low mood
Sluggishness or lack of energy
Finding it hard to concentrate
More prone to physical health problems such as colds or infections
Sleeping more than usual but with low energy
Over-eating and a craving for carbs or comfort foods
Social withdrawal
What causes Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, a lack of sunlight is thought to disrupt the body’s internal clock and serotonin levels.
Sunlight creates Vitamin D (which is actually a hormone) | ---> | Vitamin D activates genes | ---> | regulates the immune system and releases serotonin. |
If you do not have enough Vitamin D in your diet or enough sunlight, not enough serotonin is made, leading to low mood. Negative thoughts and feelings about Winter are common among people with SAD.
Holistic ways to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Go outdoors for at least 30 minutes a day
Eat a diet high in Vitamin D (foods such as oily fish, egg yolks, and mushrooms contain Vitamin D)
Try a Vitamin D supplement
Physical activity boosts endorphins and serotonin levels, improving mood.
