Homeopathy and Digestive Problems: A Personalised Approach

Bloating and constipation are just two of the digestive problems I see regularly in my practice, although I see many other digestive issues.
For some people, these symptoms have only recently appeared. For others, they have been there for years and they've already tried all sorts of things to improve them.
Perhaps you've changed your diet, increased your fibre, taken supplements or probiotics, made sure you're drinking enough water and tried to exercise regularly.
And yet, you're still struggling.
When someone comes to me with a long-standing digestive problem, I don't just look at the symptom and choose a remedy for it. I want to understand your individual picture.
It's not just about constipation or bloating
If two people both come to me with constipation, their cases may look completely different.
One person might also have bloating and headaches. Another might have hormonal problems, poor sleep and fatigue. Someone else might have anxiety, skin problems or menstrual symptoms.
The digestive symptom is just one part of the picture.
This is why I don't think chronic digestive problems are particularly suitable for trying to treat yourself from a list of homeopathic remedies.
You may come across remedies such as Nux vomica, Lycopodium or Carbo vegetabilis when researching homeopathy for digestive problems. These are remedies I may consider in certain cases, but the fact that someone has constipation or bloating isn't enough for me to choose one.
The individual details matter.
Looking at the whole health picture
During a consultation, we'll talk in detail about your digestive symptoms, but we'll also look at your wider health.
I'll want to know about things such as:
when your symptoms started
what makes them better or worse
other symptoms you're experiencing
your sleep and energy
hormonal or menstrual symptoms
your health history
medications and supplements
significant events or illnesses around the time the problem began
I then take the information from the consultation and repertorise the case.
I'm particularly interested in the strange, unusual and characteristic details of your case, as these can help me differentiate between possible remedies.
This is the part of homeopathy I find particularly interesting: two people can present with what sounds like the same problem, but their individual cases can be very different.
What about diet and lifestyle?
Homeopathy isn't the only thing I look at. There are often lifestyle and dietary factors that need attention too.
You might already have a very good diet, for example, but “healthy eating” doesn't necessarily mean that your diet is optimised for your particular gut. This is something I think is important to recognise.
There is a huge amount of general advice about gut health online: eat more fibre, eat fermented foods, take probiotics, avoid certain foods and so on.
Some of these suggestions may be helpful, but general advice isn't necessarily the same as personalised advice.
For some clients, I may therefore suggest looking at their gut microbiome in more detail so that dietary recommendations can be more tailored to them.
I see this as complementary to the homeopathic consultation rather than a replacement for it.
Homeopathy and your digestive issues
When you've had digestive symptoms for a long time, it can be frustrating to keep trying one thing after another.
My approach is to step back and look at the bigger picture.
What happened when the problem started?
What was your health like before then?
How was your digestion?
Were you taking any medication?
What was your lifestyle like?
Had you been unwell or gone through a particularly stressful period?
What else has changed over the years?
What symptoms are you experiencing now?
I look at what happened first, what happened second and what happened third.
This helps me understand how your health has changed over time, rather than only looking at where you are today.
From there, I can consider the homeopathic picture rather than just matching a remedy to a symptom
Could this approach be right for you?
If you're struggling with ongoing digestive symptoms and feel that you've already tried many of the usual approaches, a personalised consultation may help you to step back and look at the bigger picture.
My aim is to understand you, rather than just the digestive symptom you're experiencing.

Looking at the gut microbiome too
The gut microbiome is another part of the picture that I sometimes suggest looking at when someone has ongoing digestive problems.
You may already be eating what you consider to be a healthy diet. But healthy eating advice is often quite general. It is eat more fibre, eat a variety of plant foods, include fermented foods and so on.
However, there isn't one ideal diet that suits everyone. The composition of the gut microbiome varies a lot between individuals, and diet is one of the factors that can influence it.
Why gut microbiome testing is interesting
A stool sample gives information about the microorganisms present in your gut. The analysis from the gut microbiome test shows the amount of the various bacteria (both good and bad) that has been found in your gut.
For example, rather than simply saying “eat more fibre because fibre is good for your gut,” we can look at your results and consider what dietary changes might be appropriate for you.
I don't see this as replacing the homeopathic consultation. They are looking at different parts of the picture.
The homeopathic consultation looks at you, your symptoms, health history, and the circumstances around when your problems began. The microbiome test gives us information about your gut. The report that you get is tailored to you and tells you specific foods to eat more of and the foods to avoid to rebalance the gut microbiome.
Looking at both can give a really detailed picture of digestive health.
Could Gut Microbiome Testing be Beneficial For You?
Gut health doesn't just affect digestion. It can also play a role in energy levels, sleep, mood, immunity, inflammation, hormone balance, and overall wellbeing.
If you've been struggling with ongoing symptoms and would like to understand your health in more detail, I offer a free 20-minute discovery call.
