Dogs and stress relief

We’ve had Quinn, our cocker spaniel, for a few years now, and he brings a real sense of calm.

It got me thinking… what is it about dogs that makes us feel calmer and more settled when they’re around?

The benefits of dogs and how they relieve stress naturally becomes very clear when you experience this day to day. For many people, dogs offer a gentle and natural way to support emotional wellbeing, helping to calm the nervous system and reduce stress.

Why Dogs Are So Effective for Relieving Stress Naturally

When you’re feeling stressed, your mind can become busy with thoughts, worries, and “what ifs.” Dogs have a way of gently interrupting that cycle.

They bring you into the present moment.

Whether it’s through walking, playing, or simply sitting with you, these small interactions can help calm the nervous system and create a sense of ease. For many people, this becomes a natural way of managing stress and anxiety day to day.

6 Ways Dogs Support Mental, Emotional and Physical Health

1. Reduced stress levels and reduced blood pressure levels

Research shows that by petting a dog, our cortisol stress levels reduce. This calming interaction also lowers blood pressure. This in turn contributes to a healthy heart.

2. Better physical activity levels

Owning a dog encourages daily exercise, as regular walks become part of your routine. A Japanese study found that dog walkers generally did more physical activity compared non-dog owners, supporting better overall fitness.

3. Longer lifespan

A Swedish study, compared dog owners to the dogless over a period of 12 years. The study found that people with dogs were less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. Other factors such as age, body mass, and socioeconomic status were taken into consideration.

4. Beneficial for depression

As dogs are great at encouraging owners to get exercise, this can be beneficial for those suffering from depression.

Depression may be linked to loneliness and evidence shows that owning a dog makes us feel less lonely, providing emotional comfort and companionship.

5. Helps with anxiety

Walking a dog can help people who experience anxiety. This is because exercise and keeping active are important ways to help combat anxious thoughts.

Dogs can also have calming effects on their owner. Just by stroking, or playing with their dog, the mind will start to relax. This helps with anxiety and gives a sense of peace.

6. Increased social engagement

People with dogs are more socially engaged with other people.

A study shows dogs can help create human-to-human friendships and social support, both of which are good for long-term health. Many dog walkers routinely meet neighbours, other dog walkers, or strangers on their rambles.

When Dogs Help...But Stress Still Feels There

Dogs can be incredibly supportive for stress and anxiety, and for some people, this may be enough.

But for others, stress and anxiety can feel more persistent.

You might be:

  • overthinking

  • struggling to switch off

  • feeling restless or on edge

  • noticing physical symptoms like tension or poor sleep

This is often a sign that your nervous system needs a bit more support.

 A Deeper Level of Support

This is where a more individual approach can be helpful.

Homeopathy looks at your experience as a whole, emotional, mental, and physical. Rather than focusing only on the anxiety itself, it explores how it shows up for you personally.

For example, stress and anxiety can feel very different from one person to another. It might be constant worrying, difficulty sleeping, or feeling overwhelmed by small things.

By supporting the nervous system in a more targeted way, homeopathy aims to gently restore balance.

As this deeper layer begins to settle, the natural supports you already have, like walking your dog, being outdoors, and connecting with others, often become even more effective.

If you’re interested in exploring natural ways, such as homeopathy, to support you , I’ve created a free guide, Natural Health and Homeopathy.

Is homeopathy for you?

If you’re finding that things like walking your dog, getting outside, or making small lifestyle changes are helping, but you still feel there’s something underlying that hasn’t quite shifted, you may want to consider homeopathy.
