Gratitude Journaling for Self-Care: A Simple Way to Reduce Stress

Practising gratitude to support anxiety and emotional wellbeing

I first started writing a gratitude journal a few years ago after an ex-colleague told me how much it had helped her. I was curious to try it for myself.

Very quickly, I noticed a change.

Using a gratitude journal for self care can be a simple yet powerful way to support your wellbeing. It gently shifts the way you think, helping you to focus more on what is going well rather than what is going wrong.

It can make a real difference.

The Science Behind Gratitude

Gratitude really does change the way we think. When we practise it regularly, we start to notice what we have, instead of focusing on what we feel is missing.

Research supports this. A study published in The Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that people who practise gratitude tend to sleep better and longer.

Other studies have also shown that gratitude can be linked to lower levels of stress and low mood and fewer negative emotions.

Why Gratitude is an Important Part of Self-Care

When life feels busy or overwhelming, it’s easy for the mind to focus on what isn’t going well or what still needs to be done.

Gratitude gently shifts that focus.

It doesn’t ignore what’s difficult, but it creates a small change in attention, which can help your system begin to settle. Even noticing something simple, like a kind interaction or a quiet moment in your day, can help you feel more grounded.

Over time, this can support a greater sense of balance and emotional wellbeing.

When Gratitude Feels Difficult

There may be times when even simple practices like gratitude feel difficult.

You might feel mentally overloaded, physically tired, or as though your system just isn’t switching off easily.

This is often a sign that your body and mind need a deeper level of support.

A Deeper Layer of Support

This is where a more holistic approach can be helpful.

Homeopathy works differently to practices like gratitude journaling. Rather than trying to gently shift your thoughts, it works at a deeper level, looking at your individual experience as a whole, emotional, mental, and physical.

For example:

  • difficulty switching off

  • feeling easily overwhelmed

  • tension in the body

  • disrupted sleep

In homeopathy, these patterns are important. Remedies are chosen based on how you experience your symptoms as an individual. As your system begins to feel more balanced, practices like gratitude often start to feel more natural and easier to maintain.

The Mind-Body Connection

Gratitude has a calming effect on the nervous system, helping it move from a more stressed state into a calmer and more relaxed one.

This connection between mind and body is also central to homeopathy.

Emotional states can influence physical health, and physical symptoms can, in turn, affect how we feel emotionally. By working with the whole picture, homeopathy aims to gently restore balance.

Gratitude can then sit alongside this, supporting emotional wellbeing in a simple and meaningful way.

How to Start a Gratitude Practice

If you’d like to try it, a gratitude journal is a good place to begin.

Each evening, write down three things you felt grateful for that day. They don’t have to be big things. Often the small, everyday moments are the most powerful.

You might also like to write a few words about why they mattered to you. This can help you connect more deeply with the feeling.

On more difficult days, this practice can feel especially important. It’s not about forcing positivity, but about gently widening your perspective.

Supporting Your Well-being Naturally

Practising gratitude alongside homeopathy is a gentle and effective way to support your overall health.

It takes very little time, yet it can have a big impact on how you feel.

Gratitude encourages you to notice the good things in your life instead of taking them for granted. What are you grateful for today?
