4 health benefits of walking in nature

Updated: Feb 18, 2022

Benefits of Walking in Nature

I enjoy a daily walk with our cocker spaniel. He gets me outside in all weathers and although sometimes if the weather is bad I do not feel like going out, once I am out I feel better for it. I feel healthier being outdoors.

Why not improve your health with a daily walk?

Once you have made this a habit it will be part of your daily routine all year round. There are many health benefits to be had!

Why is walking in nature so beneficial?

1. Walking is good for mental well-being and improves mood

Walking in nature is so beneficial because it helps to relieve stress.

The release of stress hormones, such as Cortisol, slow down and may ease signs of depression.

  • Fresh air and sunlight boost endorphins, one of the “feel-good” hormones

  • By being in the fresh air, your body will get a boost in Vitamin D levels

  • Walking on a daily basis also gives you more energy

Walking is especially good if you have SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) for all the reasons above.

Being physically active gives your brain something to focus on, and can be a positive coping strategy for difficult times.

2. Walking is a great form of exercise that is free

Regular brisk walking can help you:

  • maintain a healthy weight

  • manage high blood pressure

  • strengthen bones and muscles

  • improve your circulation (by increasing the blood flow, getting the heart pumping around the body faster, and flushing the blood through the arteries)

Brisk walking depends on your level of fitness.

One method to determine ‘brisk walking’ is the number of steps per minute. For the average individual, 100 steps per minute is defined as ‘brisk’, according to an article in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

No need for expensive gym memberships!

3. Walking and Creative Thinking

I find walking a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

When I feel ‘stuck’ or find it hard to make a decision, I go for a walk and 9 times out of 10, when I get back home, I have the answer.

What does walking do to our brain to help in our thinking?

When we go for a walk, the heart pumps faster, circulating more blood and oxygen to all the organs, including the brain. There is growth of new brain cells and new connections are created between brain cells.

4. Walking helps you sleep better

Brisk walking can boost the effects of melatonin, ‘the sleep hormone’.

Walking first thing in the morning can help set your circadian rhythm and improve your sleep cycle. Walking can also help you have better quality sleep.

Since we have had our dog, Quinn, we have gone on a lot more family walks with our teenage children.

During the week, I usually go on shorter walks with Quinn on the lead and do brisk street walking.

At the weekends, we go on much longer walks with the dog off the lead. During these walks,I have a good chat with the children and my husband.

I love walking in the park, in woodland or on beaches. I find that this 'recharges my batteries'.

Where do you like to go on walks?
