The definition of tiredness is ‘the state of wishing for rest or sleep’, or in other words ‘weariness’. There are many reasons for feeling tired - lack of sleep, diet, stress, or a medical condition.
If you are going through perimenopause or menopause you may feel tired a lot of the time. This is due to changes in hormone levels. Hormones are chemicals that play a key role in controlling your body’s processes. There are many hormones that may cause tiredness.
The thyroid gland may be imbalanced causing tiredness. Thyroid function can be measured by having a blood test.
Low oestrogen or progesterone levels may cause tiredness.
If you are stressed, you may have high cortisol levels, which may cause tiredness.
There are some things that you can do to combat tiredness and exhaustion.
Tips for Tiredness
Tip 1
You should plan to have at least 7 hours of sleep every day if you are between 18 and 60 years old for optimal health.
Tip 2
Take some time out to have a bit of 'R&R' (rest and relaxation). If you have been on the go, doing lots of things and it has been a busy time, it is important to spend time relaxing. Allow yourself to do this.
Tip 3
To improve tiredness it is important to have a good diet. Eating every three to four hours can help reduce sugar cravings and prevent blood sugar crashes that can make you feel more tired.
Tip 4
Even though you may not feel like doing exercise if you feel tired, you may feel better after going for a brisk walk, going for a bike ride, or doing yoga.
Tip 5
If you've had a period of prolonged stress this may be causing your tiredness. Chronic fatigue may be linked to a disruption in your normal cortisol rhythm. Rebalance yours by managing your stress levels.
