As a homeopath treating many perimenopausal women, hot flushes are one of the symptoms women often mention when they come to see me. These hot flushes can go from mild to being severe and frequent and can be disruptive to daily life.
How do hormones cause a hot flush?
During menopause there are a lot of changes in the levels of hormones in the body. There is a decrease in oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
Hot flushes result from changes in the hormone, oestrogen, in the body. The blood vessels close to the surface of the skin increase to help you lose heat and this lowers the body temperature.
Hot flushes during menopause affect around 75% of women. For some women, hot flushes continue post-menopause.
Some women may be genetically predisposed to suffer from hot flashes, according to a study. This study suggests that women who have gene variants that affect a receptor in the brain regulating oestrogen release are more likely to have hot flashes than women who lack them.
How stress can be a factor for hot flushes
Stress or anxiety can also be a factor in how frequent and severe the hot flushes are. When stressed, the adrenal glands produce cortisol and the production of oestrogen and progesterone are reduced.
What do I do in my initial consultation?
Homeopathy is tailored to each person, and takes into consideration both emotional and physical symptoms.
I like to ask a lot of questions about the menopausal symptoms that you are experiencing including,
How often do you have hot flushes?
How severe are they on a scale of 1-10?
How long do the hot flushes last?
Where do the hot flushes start?
Is there any time that hot flushes are worse?
What tends to trigger the hot flushes off?
Do you experience night sweats, and if so how often and how severe are they?
Are there any other menopausal physical symptoms that you are experiencing?
How are your stress levels on a scale of 1-10?
How do you feel emotionally?
In the follow-up appointments, as well as discussing any changes and going through the questions, I reassess how you are feeling.

The first consultation is an assessment where we go through your health history as well as discuss your menopausal symptoms.
